Jerusalem

Client: Sherover Foundation for Culture
Location: Jerusalem
Area: 15.000 Sq.m.

Gita Sherover culture center will be located near the entrance to Abu Tor neighbourhood and the Sherover promenade. The building will be located between the wall of the monastery in the west and south of the entrance to the boardwalk and the existing restaurant in Naomi Street. In order to bridge between different levels on the site, the wall of the monastery, the residential neighbourhood and the existing restaurant, we chose a strategy that produces a new topographic ground for the whole public programs, which is the physical infrastructure and the new conceptual structure.
The building is relatively high, isolated from the neighbouring buildings, which allows the Gita Sherover cultural center audience to be able to enjoy the spectacular desert view to the east and the older neighbourhoods in the city from the west. On the ground floor there are a wide bays facing east, while the upper floors open east and west fronts the view. The programmatic distribution is according to the criteria of activities to fit, as much as possible throughout the day and night. Combination of different architectural program under one roof allows flexibility of uses for different age groups. The program emphasis is on culture, knowledge and leisure for all ages, adults, young people and families. The various activities in the building will be identified as free and paid activities. The building will be divided into three layers on top of an underground car park:

Ground floor – public layer – partially opened, partially covered and partially closed.

Mid layer – Food and culture floor.

Top layer – Recreation, health and Sports.

Between the different layers are formed five programmatic meetings areas, where various architectural programs are intersecting with the different layers
In the urban scale, the building is playing as part of a network of public buildings with social roles that mitigate public spaces, open and closed according to city needs. Public space will be deployed on the ground level of each project. The new ground level is formed by a topographic surface – ends with an opening to the public. This level will accommodate programs available to the public such as galleries, areas for children, overlooking Cafe, ticket sales and subscriptions, office, etc.

The cultural layer is the middle layer, the layer at the flick of public recreation and sport. This layer invades the other layers at various points, and produces an interface that runs on the principle of representing the structure, but also creates a culture.

Due to demographic changes in Jerusalem, the city became heterogeneous consist of many populations. Unlike Tel Aviv, which has relatively homogeneous population and hence many activities are carried out in a decentralised manner, one can imagine the inhabitants of Jerusalem looking for places where they can share a common interest with others, which also convincing the idea of a large building hosting many activities under one roof, while switching activities with the same common interest. In addition, cooperation between commercial and non-commercial entities under one roof, infrastructures, resources and spaces allow economic savings, as well as the use of flexible architectural program, flexible-sized spaces, the ability to integrate a large number of people at various events and various businesses distinct identity and marketing.

The structure will be built on demand in three stages. The organisation will be executed so that every step will be directed by a programmatic dosage which will fit to the needs of day and night, and stock ages. The project will build patterns of massing, connected to each other and vary by the states of the programs inside the building. One can imagine how these patterns can create a network of the same or different architectural program also available on other webs.

The system is designed constructive method adapts to Hfrogrmatiot layers and allows the structure to be flexible and respond to changing and future needs. Every step may be to accommodate Frogrmatiot and replace all the other architectural program, according to the values of each layer without having to make structural changes.

Parking lots layer – Construction conventional fixed grid adapted to the parking lots. Public layer – sitting on the topographic surface parking spaces and is supported by the construction of the tribunes that allows the various heights. The building sits on more than five points of large developers, without the volume of pages and supported by a huge tangles of concrete. Culture layer – supported by steel trusses and building – wide pass similar distances as architectural program and a trinket from complicate traffic. Sports and Leisure layer – supported by pillars free."
